Katie and Jeremy bought a home they loved, but wanted to update the interior and add a second story. This gut renovation and major addition added value to their home while preserving and complimenting the home's original charm.

The Challenge

Integrating the addition with the existing character of the home was a main priority of this project. We wanted an addition that felt distinct from the existing and added a more contemporary feel, yet didn’t feel awkward or out of place with the existing home or the neighborhood.

The Solution

By identifying design elements of the existing home that had a strong visual impact, such as the gable roof and round port window, and repeating them in the addition, we created a rhythm in the front facade that connected the old to the new - resulting in a home with the best of old world charm and modern comforts.

3 Key Features

Built-Ins

This client loves built-in everything (so do we). So we designed a built-in home office and a built-in window seat in the upstairs hallway. These added a lot of character and old-world sophistication to the home.

Primary Suite

We do many remodel & addition projects that expand or add a primary suite, and this is a good example. By moving all of the bedrooms upstairs, we had plenty of room for a luxurious primary bedroom, spa-like bathroom, and large closet.

Home Office

With more people working from home, having a designated space to focus is becoming an essential in many homes. This home had an existing sun room that we finished and converted into a spacious home office with plenty of desk space, storage, and daylight.

"Anne and ATMO Architecture fit our needs precisely, and we were extremely happy with her design for our rebuild. She was particularly good at guiding and working with us, and she seemed to immediately intuit what we value in the flow and in the space of our house. Moreover, she was able to envision a design that also fit in the eclectic architectural tradition of our historic community."
