This new construction home on a gently sloping hill was designed to cultivate indoor-outdoor living for a young family, with plenty of space for entertaining.

The Challenge

The home site was on a continuous hillside, so we had to be thoughtful with elevation and massing to incorporate the home into the hillside organically. We also wanted to create a dramatic and beautiful outdoor space which is really the feature of this home.

The Solution

Through using a procession of spatial blocks that climbed the hill, we were able to design the home in layers so that it didn’t feel out of place. We used retaining wall planters to contain the outdoor living space that was carved into the hill behind the house, creating more privacy and a sense of safety.

3 Key Features

Planted Retaining Walls

We used planted retaining walls as a design feature. This allowed us to carve out the hillside in an intentional way that created an aesthetic solution to a utilitarian problem.

Natural Materials

With contemporary form and grand spaces, we like to soften the space with a lot of texture and natural materials. We used natural wood cladding, textured wood floors, and chunky terrazzo with natural stone, which all provided grounding in the space.

Indoor-Outdoor Living

In this home, the outdoor space was just as important as the indoor. Our client has children and loves to entertain, so we designed a spacious outdoor kitchen and designed the pool, hot tub, and fireplace to feel like a private oasis unto themselves.

"I recently had the pleasure of working with ATMO Architecture. It was an eye-opening experience on the value of hiring an architect. Anne’s approach is something special. She’s not just about making a space look good; she’s about creating an environment that really works for you. Her background is impressive, and it shows in her attention to detail and her innovative ideas. But what really sets her apart is how she listens and understands what you need. She took our ideas and transformed them into a space that’s not only functional but also feels right for us. It’s like she has this sixth sense for what a space needs and how it can best serve the people using it."
